Dennis Haworth was born in Porterville, California in 1973 to Elvin and Kay Haworth. The family lived in the Chowchilla area until 1976 when they moved to southern Oregon. They moved back to Chowchilla in 1981 and resumed farming.
Education & Professional Life
Dennis played trumpet in the Wilson and High School Marching Bands. In High School Dennis became an Explorer with the Madera County Sheriff’s Department sparking a career in law enforcement. He graduated from Chowchilla Union High School in 1992.
In 1994, while attending Fresno State, Dennis became a reserve deputy sheriff for Madera County and a volunteer fire fighter with Madera County Engine 2 based out of the City of Chowchilla. In 1997, Dennis worked for the Madera County Probation Department as a Juvenile Detention Officer. Later that same year he was hired as a full time Deputy Sheriff with Madera County. During his time with the Sheriff’s Department he worked as a patrol deputy in every community in Madera County. In 1999, Dennis became one of the first Detectives with the Agricultural Crimes Unit. He served on this multi-county taskforce for nearly six years.
Dennis earned an Associate of Science degree from Merced City College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Fresno State and in 2009 completed his Master of Public Administration degree from National University.
In 2005, Dennis became a founding officer with the University of California, Merced Police Department. This gave him the unique opportunity to assist in the creation of a state agency from the ground up. He wrote many of the agencies policies, tested and selected much of the equipment used by the agency. Dennis became an NRA firearms instructor and enjoys teaching the shooting sports. He was a staff advisor for the Sports Shooting Club at UC Merced, where he instructed and mentored students. Dennis retired from UCMPD in 2012.
Dennis has been an instructor at the Stanislaus County Police academy, writer for two Law Enforcement magazines and a college instructor at ITT tech teaching courses on Criminology and Government.
Dennis and his wife, Debra, purchased a house in Chowchilla in 1997 and have lived here ever since. They have two children, Dillon and Zoe. Dennis is proud that his children are the fifth generation of his family to live in Chowchilla.
Chowchilla Government Involvement
Dennis was first elected to the Chowchilla City Council in November 2008. He has served as the Mayor and on many committees and boards during his time on the council. He has been the Chairman of the Board for the Community Action Partnership of Madera County since 2015.
